On February 17, the women’s basketball team welcomed the Elms College Blazers into the Athletic Center for its annual Senior Day match. On a day filled with emotion, specifically for the Lasers, the two teams looked slightly frantic to begin the game.
The Lasers came out with very good defense despite some offensive mishaps. The team denied easy passes and made it hard for the Blazers to get through the lanes, resulting in some great defensive stops. The bench continued to support the team throughout the first quarter which gave the Lasers plenty of momentum. At the end of the first quarter, the score stood at a 16-7 Laser lead.
The home team carried this momentum into the second quarter, building upon their lead with multiple threes. Laser forwards Laura Johnson and Blaize Mack did a great job of pounding the glass, giving the team opportunities for second-chance points. For the majority of this quarter, it never seemed that the Blazers could get anything going. The Lasers, meanwhile, continued to give their opponent headaches in the paint and on the sidelines, showcasing their enthusiasm on the bench consistently. The Blazers began to unravel, and the game was 36-21 at the half.
The second half saw a much more competitive Elms team that gave the Lasers a few issues on defense early in the third. Unfortunately for Elms, this just was not enough. Lasell continued to make great shots and even better passes, especially from the guards.
Graduate student Brooke Damboise stole the spotlight, as she put on a show for her family in attendance. Damboise, who finished with seven assists. also led her team in scoring with 15 points, leaving everything out on the court in her final game at the Athletic Center.
The women’s basketball team won in a rout, 78-52, clinching the 5 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoff bracket. They will begin their postseason quest in an away game against Emmanuel on February 20 at 6 p.m.
