Students gathered in the Athletic Center to support the Women’s Basketball team, Lasell UNIDOS, and the Honors Program for a special Black History Month Game that included a half-court knockout game during half-time and information tables on Black History on the upper track. The event was held on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Organizations such as the Black Men’s Group, Student Government Association, as well as the Lasell Black Student Association (BSA), had educational posters and tables about black history during the game. BSA had a spin-the-wheel with candy and raffle prizes while also promoting their 2025 Gala which was held on Feb. 21.

The Balling for BHM Basketball game is a powerful way to celebrate Black History Month. It’s a fun and engaging way for Lasell to create unity, awareness, and community while honoring its people of color (POC) student-athletes. It’s a start to honoring everyone.” Senior and organizer Jasmine Depina said about the event.

The Lasers unfortunately lost to Saint Joseph’s 68-54. The team was led by sophomore Blaize Mack with 11 points and both senior Mia Sullivan-Saunders and junior Shirle Majors each poured in 10 points. The team wanted to win the game, but they still won the night. The Women’s basketball Coach Kelley Sundberg said: “I want to hold more themed games in the future.”

“What is great about this event is it gives students the opportunity to help promote other students' cultures here on campus in a fun and unique way. This event has been student-led under the direction of Coach Sundberg,” Vikki Turnquist, senior professional academic advisor, said. “It’s been a great partnership opportunity between the athletic department and the honors program, giving honors students a hands-on experience to earn an honors component.”

“This event is not just about the game, it’s about bringing the community together to celebrate Black History Month through sports, unity, and representation,” President of UNIDOS Angely Estrada said. “UNIDOS is proud to support initiatives that highlight diversity and inclusion on campus while also having fun. We are looking forward to an event that uplifts and empowers our student body.”

Every group involved had positive things to say about the event, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a bigger and better version of it in the future.
