From admissions to baseball; "Ducky" does it all

For a high school student, completing the admissions process is not a walk in the park. That is why schools have opened jobs for admission counselors, to help teenagers figure out if the school they are applying for is truly the school for them.

Matt “Ducky” Sammarco was hired at Lasell University as an Admissions Counselor after his successful career as an outfielder for the Lasers. Sammarco attended Lasell from 2011 to 2015, where he studied Sport Management, while also being a key part of the newly formed baseball team.

After graduating from Lasell, Sammarco worked for the Tri-City Valleycats in Troy, NY, the single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. After three years with the Valleycats, he shifted over to Factory Athletics, where he assisted high school baseball and softball players with the college recruitment process and player development. Soon after, he found himself back at Lasell with the title of Associate Head Coach of the baseball team.

In the admissions office, Sammarco tries to help high schoolers find “The perfect school they might have never heard of.” He believes that finding the right school for someone is a task he wants to take on as he found Lasell to be a perfect fit for him and what he wanted straight out of college. Sammarco’s goal is to shine a light on Lasell, highlighting “who we are, what we are, and where we are located.” He guides prospective students and teaches them about the community, while also assisting families with tours of the campus led by Blue Key Society.

Undergraduate Admissions Office Manager Tony Percuoco says that Sammarco is a team player and goes above and beyond for the students he meets both on the road and on campus. “You can tell he loves what he does and enjoys being here,” Percuoco said. “It’s like another home for him.”

As the associate head coach, Sammarco primarily works with the outfielders and hitters on the field, but in the weight room, he works with all the players. He has become the “number two guy” to his former teammate and now Head Coach, Billy Uberti. Sammarco recently got certified in strength and conditioning to assure his players he provided the best assistance possible in the weight room. He believes that learning what to do in the weight room not only helps college athletes now but can help their future selves stay in shape as well.

When asked about his time with the university, Sammarco said Lasell was the perfect school for him and enjoyed his time there. “I am glad to have all my eggs in admission and [to be] coaching here.”

Now an established role model, Sammarco continues to leave a positive lasting impact at Lasell both on and off the field.
