Keeping Thanksgiving (online) class-y?

Graphic by Hanna Babek

For me, it has always been a struggle to go home for the week of Thanksgiving. There is so much thought that goes into it; you have to think about how much to bring home and if you should you not go home at all and stick around campus to work on that final project in relative peace. These are the questions I have always had to ask my- self when thinking about going home for the holiday.

Lasell will have asynchronous lessons for all courses on campus for the week of Thanksgiving (Nov. 25- 27). Students will not have to worry about going home for just three or four days any longer. Some people I have spoken to about this say they would leave to come back to school right after Thanksgiving dinner, as they felt like they had to be back on campus. It is especially beneficial for those who live out of state, or even across the country (and in some cases, another country entirely), as they don’t have to worry about 60% of Thanksgiving break being taken up waiting in an airport or taking a multi-day road trip back home. They can now leave after their classes the week before Thanksgiving, which, in addition to the benefits mentioned above, could be helpful in other ways.

Many students have jobs at home and have to use their own money to pay for college, myself included. Some rely on their at-home jobs to pay their tuition, and now their opportunity to work just multiplied. Many of the businesses students work in, such as grocery stores, retail, and restaurants are far more busy during the holiday season as well, giving them the opportunity to ra

ck up hours on their week off.

This Thanksgiving break could also give students a reprieve from the stresses that come with finals. A lack of on-campus activities and classes taking up their time means they not only have more time to complete final projects and papers, along with studying for exams, but it gives them what we all need every once in a while: a break. Just a minute to sit down on the couch with family, friends, and pets to breathe and relax without the stress of schoolwork.

I know I did that a lot over the break, and I hope all of you took the chance to do so as well. We deserved it
