The Multicultural Student Union at Lasell held a follow-up event to its Loc’d In curly and coily hair event Wednesday, April 2. While the first event focused on the difference between different hair types, the follow-up event was a braiding workshop. The event held in the Arnow Campus Center included hands-on braiding and hair-care techniques, raffles with scalp spas, curly hair-care products, hair tools, braiding kits, and even Haitian food.

“Everyone wanted a second part and we wanted to give the students what they wanted. Like no one wants to plan an event no one goes to” said MSU Vice President Yani Galarza.

MSU has held many events like this one and its predecessor, Loc’d In held Feb. 25. As cookies and Haitian food were being eaten, Lyric Miller, president of MSU, gave a presentation on braiding history, etiquette, technique, and what products are good for your natural hair.

“I love the experience of the event,” said Brihanna Montina.

“It feels amazing to have an event that educates people about curly and coily hair,” said freshman Keyla Rochelle.

After the presentation and a second round of food, everyone got to the hands-on braiding part of the event. MSU provided mannequin heads and the braiding teaching and practice commenced. The event ended with the raffle prizes being awarded and lots of fun.

“I enjoyed how I feel like I am part of the community,” said freshman Janellys Martinez.

“These events make me feel more welcome and accepted.”
