The women's volleyball team improved to 14-1 as they swept the Wheaton College Lyons at the Athletic Center on Thursday night.
After setting the all-time win streak record for Lasell University women’s volleyball last Saturday, the Lasers came out ready to play in the first set. They allowed only two kills from the Lyons’ offense and rode that momentum to a quick 25-15 win.
The second set started less kindly for the Lasers, as they found themselves down 13-7 early to a Lyons team that looked hungry to make a statement. The Lasers' balanced offensive attack kept them in the set, as they continued to battle and hustle to every ball. The turning point in the set came with the Lasers down 15-13, as outside hitter McKenna McCool recorded three straight aces to spark a 7-0 run. The Lasers would not look back as they stole the second set 25-17.
During the third set, the lead swayed back and forth as each team responded with a run of their own. But unlike last week's game against Western New England (WNE), the Lasers were able to put their opponent away in straight sets. With the score tied at 24, Sydney Katz delivered the knockout blow with two straight aces to win the game.
Following the match, outside hitter Camila Lopez explained that the difference between this game and the one against WNE was the consistency during the beginning of the third set.
“We started slow in the [third] set of the last game. We thought we were going to win,” said Lopez. “In this [game], we started strong and didn’t let them go up.”
Aside from the starters, middle blocker Morgan Bogli praised her teammates for their incredible passion all night long, despite not seeing much of the hardwood.
“Our bench is always amazing,” said Bogli. “We try to keep our energy up so the players on the court have energy and it showed tonight.”
The Lasers will head back on the road Saturday, facing Mitchell College and New England College during their tri-match beginning at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
