The men’s soccer team went 1-1 this week, earning its lone victory against the Mitchell College Mariners by a score of 3-2. Graduate striker Mpumelelo Maphumulo, or as his teammates call him, “Pumi,” scored all three Laser goals.
After the game, senior goalkeeper Antonio Centracchio highlighted the importance of beating an opponent in the same conference and harnessing confidence for their second match against another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent in Saint Joseph (Conn.).
“This is the kind of momentum we want to build off,” Centracchio said.
When asked about the defense this season, and moving forward without their former Captain and defensive anchor, Michael Pulumbo, Centracchio raved about his team’s tenacity and effort.
“Something in our defense that we have more of this year than in my four years here is grit. “They’re going to fight for every ball. They’re going to win every ball. They’re not going to be second to anything,” Centracchio said. “Losing a player like [Pulumbo] was massive, but I thought the performance today showed that we’ll be alright.”
In their second game of the week on Saturday, the Lasers lost to the Saint Joseph Blue Jays 1-0. Next week, the Lasers will face Saint Joseph’s (Maine) at home on Monday, before going back on the road to Nichols on Thursday and returning home on Saturday to play Dean College.
