Lasell men's basketball improved their record to 6-1 with a dominant victory over Salem State on their home court on Dec. 3. The first half was a thrilling back-and-forth affair, but the Lasers came out with intensity in the second half, pulling away to a convincing 92-60 win. This marked the team's most impressive performance of the season, especially after returning from a challenging five-game road trip.
Sophomore transfer and guard Tyler Custin was the standout player of the game. After not seeing any playing time earlier in the season, Custin was ready to make an impact, going 6-of-11 from the field and finishing with 18 points.
"Gotta stay ready," Custin said after the game. "I came in and hit some shots. I'm thankful for my teammates; they kept looking for me."
Custin's sharp shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, helped the Lasers extend their lead in the second half, and his teammates did an excellent job of finding him in key moments.
The Lasers' defense was exceptional, holding Salem State to just 60 points and limiting their star player, Omri Merryman, to a mere 7 points. Merryman, who shoots 51.7% from the field, struggled against Lasell’s tight defense, shooting just 3-of-13 on the night.
Looking ahead, the Lasers are set to face the undefeated Wesleyan Cardinals on Dec. 5. Despite the challenge, team leader and senior guard Marcus Lewis remains confident.
"I feel like it’s just another challenge for us, another obstacle in our way. We are just going to lock in," Lewis said.
With championship aspirations and a strong 6-1 start, the Lasers are proving they’re ready to contend for the top spot this season.
