POP-ular costumes: pop culture & Halloween

2024 has been a year filled with iconic moments, and with Halloween just around the corner, there is no shortage when it comes to potential costume ideas. From rising stars on the silver screen, to pop singers topping the charts, this Halloween is going to be filled with some pretty cool costume recreations.

Recent music is one of the biggest inspirations for some of the top costumes of the year, with potential for solo costumes or groups. Pop divas have made their comeback this year, and the crew of them are top contenders for some of the most iconic looks of the year. Just to name a few, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, CharliXCX, and Olivia Rodrigo are some of the biggest names that people may choose for a costume.

The top films of the year are coming in strong with lots of potential for group and couples costumes. While many could be done solo, it is looking like most are opting to go all out filling up the principal cast. Deadpool and Wolverine, Beetlejuice, Wicked, Saltburn, Lisa Frankenstein, and Challengers are at the top of many people's lists.

Halloween wouldn't be complete without Harley Quinn, a favorite costume almost every year, but gone are the days of Margot Robbie. Her Suicide Squad look was iconic for years until Barbie came along, but now Robbie is passing on the torch of Harley Quinn. The new Joker movie featuring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix is on the rise, and it seems the Halloween scene will be seeing a new rendition of Harley and her partner in crime.

While costumes from famous and well-known industries are always a go-to, internet references and that side of pop culture always find their way into Halloween. From TikTok to the Olympics, inspiration for costumes has come from all sorts of places. From the rising fame of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders to the downfall of Jojo Siwa’s music career and the five seconds of fame of the "Hawk Tuah" girl. Along with those internet moments, nobody can forget the controversy of Raygun and her Olympic failure at breakdancing.

Whether you are dressing up as one of the top costumes of the year, or something so niche you’ll have to set the inspiration as your phone lock screen, Halloween is all about having fun, and you don't need one of the popular costumes of the year to do so.
