The Lasell Women's Field Hockey team had their home opener Thursday at Grellier Field, and took their second win of the season. The Lasers dominated the Elms Blazers by a score of 9-0 in their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference game of the season.
The game’s leading scorer, senior Sheridan Blaha said “We went into the GNAC game knowing we had to play like a team and that’s just what we did. More games like this will lead us to the cup.”
The first quarter of the game started with an aggressive defense from the Lasers that carried through-out the game. At 12:54 junior Lily Stark scored the home team’s first goal. About a minute later, Blaha scored the team's second goal, ending the first period 2-0.
In the second quarter, the Lasers added two more goals to their total. Blaha scored again at 19:11 with an assist from Stark, and freshman Halleen Seguin scored her first collegiate career goal.
In the second half the Lasers continued their onslaught. At 33:48, Blaha scored her third goal completing the hat trick. The second goal of the period came from Stark for her second of the game, assisted by Blaha.
The Lasers went on to tally three more goals in the fourth quarter. Blaha scored her fourth of the game at 51:20, which matched her career high from Regis, assisted by junior Alyson Barnes. The second goal in the fourth period came from sophomore Caitlyn Smith for her third goal this season. Stark completed her hat trick to round out the scoring for the Lasers.
Ending the match 9-0, the Lasers took home their first GNAC Victory of the season.
Blaha described taking the field for her last home opener as ‘bittersweet’. “It was amazing to see how many fans came out to support our team and I hope this game showed everyone what we are made of,” said Blaha.
Blaha and the Lasers will take on Salve Regina in their next home game on Tuesday, September 13th.
