Spring break is a staple to colleges and universities. It is a week to have fun and let loose during a difficult semester. Getting a break from class- es just before the end of the year is a relief to many students who are busy with internships, projects, extracurriculars and other commitments.
The nearby Brandeis University is conducting its semester break twice; one week in February and one week in April. The April break is during the observance of Passover, which explains why students will have that specific week off.
I do not think having two weeks off during a semester is necessary, though it would be great to have more time off from school. In my experience, school vacation was the best part of my years in grade school, but that could have been because, at that time, school and home were two different things.
Here, it’s different. The environment we are in allows us to make our own decisions and experience education like never before. It makes us want to be here rather than at home.
Plus, seniors having a sudden break only two or three weeks before their final exams and then moving on to graduation just feels uncomfortable and uncalled for.
What is the point of going back to class unless you need to? I bet there were a handful of students who did not return to campus after the last Thanksgiving break.
However, this is possible if the semester were to be extended by one week, thus allowing two weeks of school vacation. With this change, we would get the opportunity for more trips and vacations; it would feel slightly longer and allow students to be more engaged with classes and internships. Even though it’s not necessary, it would not be the worst idea that has ever been thought of at this school.
But I believe it’s okay to get through March without any major breaks. It’s not that bad.
Brandeis University has a schedule that works for its students, but we are not Brandeis University. We are Lasell University, which has a traditional one-week spring break and a schedule that works for the students to give them enough time to relax when needed. It is not a bad thing to maybe change the scheduling of the semester a little bit, but for now, it will have to stay this way.
